2011 Message from GUA President

GatesAs we all know, after a stormy 2009, the world economies made a very strong recovery in 2010. I am very pleased to inform you that for GUA as a group, our sales revenue ended the year on a very impressive note - sales in ASEAN, China and India hit an all-time high.

Certainly, this record sales achievement would not be possible without the hard work and commitment of our staff and the undying support of our distributors and customers. On behalf of the company, I want to take this opportunity to say a big “THANK YOU” to all of you!

In a dynamic environment like ours, there will always be challenges both in the internal and external environment. On one hand, we need to manage staff turnover in emerging markets as the hiring rate in the tight job market picks up momentum. On the other hand, the strong Asia currencies will have an impact on export competitiveness.

Looking ahead, I remain very optimistic about what 2011 will bring. Firstly, we have oversold our production capacity in Asia. Considering the huge and growing market potential in Asia, we will continue to invest in new production lines so that our capacity can be increased to cope with rising demand.

In the last 12 to 18 months, we have also established new systems and continuous improvement programs internally to increase our operational efficiency. Over time, we will be able to reap the benefits of such initiatives when we can deliver a more competitive product with a shorter lead time to the market.

At the same time, we want to offer you with a wider range of products. The key is to develop and make products that the market needs and not necessarily what we can offer. Hearing the voice of the customers is obviously important as we continue to grow. If you have any idea along this line, I am very interested to hear from you.

GUA has a strong foundation in Asia and is well positioned to grow further. In the ever changing market conditions, we must adapt to change swiftly. If we are not responsive enough, we will be left behind in no time.

The year of 2011 itself is a very special year for both Gates and GUA. Gates celebrates its 100th anniversary and GUA has been established for 40 years! We are envied by many successful companies as we have a company, a brand, a trademark and a product that can withstand the test of time. We want to celebrate this success with all of you.

With your support and dedication, I strongly believe that Gates and GUA will achieve another year of record sales. For the next 100 years, we will continue to be very successful and we want you to be part of our success.

Increasing Gates Exposure with Vehicle Wraps

The flexibility and mobility of using vehicle wraps provide a cost-effective and broad-reaching advertising and marketing message. This form of advertising combines both the elements of marketing and branding by making it more appealing and attractive to customers.

Most importantly, vehicle wraps are a medium through which we can strengthen the Gates identity by increasing visibility and generating greater brand awareness.

Mechanic Seminar (Kanchanaburi, Thailand)

GatesThe motorcycle mechanic seminar in Kanchanaburi, Thailand was organized by Motorcycle Mechanic Kanchanaburi Association. The objective of the seminar is to provide technical product knowledge and hands-on training for motorcycle mechanics. As a preferred supplier of motorcycle parts and products, Thai Two Wheels seized this golden opportunity to promote Gates Powerlink® scooter belt to all mechanics and partshop/workshop owners. Numerous product enquiries were generated from this seminar.

Motorcycle Drag Racing (Khon Kaen, Thailland)

GatesGates Powerlink® scooter belt distributor-Thai Two Wheels was a sponsor for the Motorcycle Drag Racing Thailand Championship in November 2010. Organized in Khon Kaen, Thailand, more than 200 racers and over 1,000 spectators participated in this event.

The Gates Powerlink® mobile unit was also used to promote our scooter belt to generate greater brand awareness for Gates Powerlink®. Most interestingly, oursponsored racing team equipped with Gates Powerlink® scooter belt emerged champion in the racing competition! This serves as evidence that our Gates
Powerlink® scooter belts provide top performance with fast and easy acceleration.

Jakarta Manufacturing Exhibition

GatesJakarta Manufacturing Exhibition is one of the biggest tradeshows in Indonesia showcasing latest products and services from various manufacturing, petrochemical, textile and oil and gas industries. Organized in Kemayoran, Jakarta in December, this tradeshow attracted more than 35,000 visitors worldwide from 34 countries.

With an impressive 135 meter booth, PT Yuan Wira Perdana (Gates distributor in Indonesia) showcased Gates products and focused on Energy Savings and Roller Chain conversion ideas. Most interestingly, Gates 5mm Poly Chain® GT® Carbon belt was featured as a superior high quality belt which can lift and hold a 550 kg Custom Harley Davidson Bike. Gates Conversion Project-Polychain® GT® Carbon™ Belt Drive System

GatesPOLY C H A I N ® G T ® C A R BON ™ Belt Drive System has once again demonstrated to be the ideal belt drive option wherever optimum performance is a priority. A problematic multi-rib V belt drive was substituted by Gates Poly Chain ® G T ® Carbon™ drive for a critical application in a high tech industry in Singapore. The outcome of the drive performance has proven to immediately resolve the issue of an under
performed multi-rib V belt drive, and instantly contributed to significant cost savings opportunity for the customer without the need for frequent replacement. The Unitta U507 tension meter shown in the foreground was used to ensure proper tension was applied.

Gates Super HC Plus ™ Vextra™ Hi-Temp Belt-Longer Life in Extreme Conditions

While it is important for V-belts to have high performing physical attributes, it is essential that they are made out of material that can withstand high temperatures and resist wear. The new Gates Super HC Plus™ Vextra™ Hi-Temp V-belt is now exclusively constructed with EPDM, a high-performance
synthetic rubber compound. This new belt made with EPDM offers a 70% broader temperature range compared to other belts and resist hardening to avoid cracking.

Factory Visit to GUTC

GatesOn 28th January, a group of representatives from PT. Kujira (Gates distributor in Indonesia) and his dealer, PT Dirgaputra paid a visit to Gates Unitta (Thailand) Co., Ltd for a factory tour of our plant. The objective of this visit is to provide a better understanding on the importance of each Gates belt manufacturing process to produce high quality belts.

The plant tour kicked off with a welcome note from our Managing Director, Mr Henry Hu, followed by a short company profile presentation by Mr Pruett Tiraratn, AR Regional Sales and Marketing Manager. Led by the plant manager, the tour highlighted the sequence and importance of each production process.

The group was impressed with the excellent quality of the production work and the intensive processes used to produce high quality Gates belts. The plant tour has equipped them with knowledge and confidence to sell more of Gates belts in Indonesia.

67 localized belts added to HTD 8mm and 14mm

Gates Unitta ASEAN has added 67 sizes of Powergrip® HTD® 8 mm and 14mm for the industrial market. The new inclusion originates from Gates Unitta Asia manufacturing facilities and the range covers a span of belt lengths over 2.5 meters. Distributors welcome the extension of the localized products which continue to provide wider coverage to overall cost efficiency to the end market.
